More Than Baseball: Empowering Youth and Communities in Barahona

In the Dominican Republic, baseball is more than a game — it's a source of hope, identity, and opportunity. Yet for many children, especially in underserved regions like Barahona, the path forward is often shaped by limited resources, economic hardship, and lack of access to consistent education and youth programs. Vias RD exists to change that reality by using baseball as a tool for education, mentorship, and community development.

The Reality in Barahona

Barahona and its surrounding province are home to roughly 200,000 people — a youthful community rich in potential but in need of investment and support. The region faces persistent poverty and limited development. Many families rely on agriculture, remittances, and informal work for survival. Formal employment opportunities remain limited.

Educational challenges compound these economic issues. Rural provinces including those near Barahona have higher illiteracy rates than the national average, which hinders access to jobs, opportunities, and civic participation. According to UNICEF Dominican Republic, tens of thousands of students in Barahona province have left school in recent years — a direct result of the pressures poverty places on families. The Dominican Ministry of Education continues to identify youth retention as a national priority.

What Vias RD Actually Does

Vias RD steps into this gap by creating a safe, structured environment where youth can grow. Through consistent coaching, mentorship, and athletic development via Los Piratas del Sur, participants learn discipline, teamwork, and leadership — skills that carry into every aspect of their lives. Baseball becomes a foundation for personal growth, not just athletic ambition.

A central pillar of our mission is education. We actively require participants to stay in school and maintain their grades alongside sports. In communities where economic pressures often pull children out of the classroom, this requirement — backed by accountability from Bernarda Acosta and Coach Ulises Batista — can mean the difference between dropping out and graduating.

How Impact Actually Looks

The impact shows up in everyday moments: kids finishing homework before practice, parents engaging with coaches and mentors, older players modeling responsibility for younger teammates. Success isn't measured solely by contracts or signings. It's measured by students who graduate, young leaders who emerge on and off the field, and families who gain stability and confidence.

While stories of professional baseball signings often dominate narratives about Dominican youth, Vias RD focuses on the bigger picture: preparing children for life. Whether a participant becomes a professional athlete or pursues another path entirely, they leave with confidence, skills, and hope. Our Education Via is building toward a Vias Learning Center that will extend this support further.
