One mission.
Multiple Vias.
Every young person starts from a different place. Vias RD creates multiple ways forward through education, athletics, mentorship, and opportunity in Barahona, Dominican Republic.
Vias means ways, routes, or paths — a name built around creating more ways forward. Vias RD is operated by The Straley Project, a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity, EIN 85-0947825.
Why We Chose The Name
What does "Vias" mean in Spanish?
In Spanish, vías means ways, routes, or paths.
We chose the name because young people do not all need the same kind of opportunity. Some may enter through baseball. Others through education, softball, mentorship, or future opportunities we haven't built yet.
The doorway may be different.
The destination is the same.
What Is A Via?
A Via is a way forward.
Some students enter through education. Others enter through baseball, softball, mentorship, or a future opportunity we have not built yet. Each Via serves a different purpose, but all lead toward the same goal: creating ways out of poverty through education, athletics, mentorship, faith, and opportunity.
Education
School accountability and family communication happen today, while the future Vias Learning Center is being developed to provide structured tutoring, English, technology, STEM, and academic support.

Different doorways.
One destination.
Education is the foundation. Athletics create engagement. Mentorship builds character. Opportunity creates long-term impact. Every Via strengthens the others.
The Vias
Three ways into the mission.
Each Via plays a different role in the larger Vias RD ecosystem. Some are active today. Some are being built. All point toward the same future.
The Foundation
Education Via
Today, Education Via includes school accountability, family communication, encouragement, and informal support. The future Vias Learning Center will create a dedicated place for tutoring, English, technology, STEM, and mentoring once the required resources are secured.
Active Program
Baseball Via
The Baseball Via uses baseball as a vehicle for accountability, mentorship, and opportunity. Through Los Piratas del Sur, student-athletes train, compete, stay in school, and grow beyond the field.
Early-Stage Program
Girls Softball Via
Girls Softball Via is beginning with three girls already practicing in Barahona. Vias RD is building carefully around that small beginning with safe coaching, equipment, mentorship, school support, and a structure that can grow as participation grows.
Looking Ahead
More Vias.
More opportunity.
The goal is not to create programs for the sake of creating programs. Future Vias will be built only when they help students access new opportunities and when local needs support their development.
English Language Programs
English learning can expand communication, education, job readiness, confidence, and future pathways.
STEM & Technology
STEM workshops, computers, internet access, and digital skills can open new ways for students to imagine their future.
Workforce Development
Future programs may support career readiness, leadership development, scholarships, internships, and vocational opportunities.
Long-Term Vision
Build deeply.
Then build again.
Vias RD’s immediate focus is Barahona. We believe meaningful impact happens through long-term relationships, local leadership, and sustained investment in one community at a time.
Our goal is not to create shallow programs in many places. Our goal is to build a model that works. As the Vias grow and mature in Barahona, we hope to partner with additional communities throughout the Dominican Republic, adapting the model to local needs while maintaining the same commitment to education, mentorship, athletics, and opportunity.
Today, the focus is Barahona.
Tomorrow, the vision is bigger.
